Agronomic Methodology

Why Photobiological Precision Dictates Vegetative & Floral Morphogenesis

In aeroponic root environments, mineral nutrient uptake rates occur at 2.5× to 3.8× the velocity of static media cultivation because root zone oxygenation (DO > 8.2 mg/L) is never diffusion-limited. However, this amplified metabolic engine creates an immediate bottleneck at the photosynthetic canopy: the light reaction phase.

Operating fixtures based purely on manufacturer nominal wattage or human-eye photometric lumens (lm/W) yields disastrous leaf margin chlorosis or severe photoinhibition. Managing photons as physical reactants — fixed 380–800nm spectral resolution with McCree-weighted action spectra — is the only route to predictable dry-mass accumulation.

Standard Operating Procedure

Four-Stage Chaining Protocol

Deterministic capture → solve → steer → record chain for this domain.

STAGE 01 Capture

Collect emitter PPF, suspension height, photoperiod and fixture efficacy for the canopy being modelled.

✓ ±0.01 µmol/s
STAGE 02 Propagate

Treat the emitter as a point source and divide PPF by 4π and the square of the hang height to reach canopy PPFD.

✓ Geometry aware
STAGE 03 Integrate

Multiply PPFD by photoperiod and the 0.0036 conversion constant to express the day as a single DLI figure.

✓ mol/m²/day
STAGE 04 Record

Check the DLI against the propagation, vegetative or generative target and log the fixture configuration alongside it.

COMPUTATIONAL FAQ

Frequently Asked Lighting & Energy Questions

Deterministic answers from the domain solver, verified against the published tolerances.

01 How do I convert PPF to PPFD at a given hang height? ▾
For a bare emitter treated as a point source, PPFD = (PPF / 4π) / h² with h in meters. Reflector geometry and wall losses make the real figure lower, so treat the result as an upper bound rather than a measurement.
02 What daily light integral should I target? ▾
Propagation sits near 6 to 12 mol/m²/day, vegetative growth 15 to 25, and flowering 30 to 45 for high-wire crops. Above about 45 the garden usually becomes CO2- and water-limited rather than light-limited.
03 Why does the McCree action spectrum matter? ▾
It describes relative quantum efficiency of photosynthesis across wavelength, peaking near 450 nm and 660 nm. It is the weighting used to judge whether a spectrum is efficient, as opposed to how bright it appears to the eye.
04 Does far-red light increase yield? ▾
Far-red drives the phytochrome photostationary state toward shade avoidance, which can increase leaf area and total biomass in some crops. It also causes stem elongation, so it is a morphology tool rather than a free yield multiplier.
05 Why does LED efficacy fall as junction temperature rises? ▾
Radiant efficiency droop means a growing fraction of each additional watt becomes heat instead of photons. A short thermal path and a drive current below the bin rating preserve both output and service life.
