Why Mulder’s Antagonism Matrix & Osmotic Potential Dictate Plant Vigour

In recirculating closed-loop hydroponics and aeroponics, ions do not act in isolation. Plant roots encounter a competitive electrochemical soup governed by thermodynamic affinity, charge balance, and competitive binding at root transport channels.

When commercial operators indiscriminately spike soluble Potassium (K+) during fruit set without balancing bivalent cations, Calcium (Ca2+) and Magnesium (Mg2+) absorption drops dramatically — leading directly to physiological blossom-end rot and marginal chlorosis despite adequate Calcium in reservoir assays.

Standard Operating Procedure

Four-Stage Chaining Protocol

Deterministic capture → solve → steer → record chain for this domain.

STAGE 01 Capture

Take the target EC, the K : N steering ratio and the reservoir volume that the recipe must satisfy.

✓ ±0.01 mS/cm
STAGE 02 Scale

Scale the elemental baseline by the ratio of target EC to the 1.85 mS/cm reference recipe so every ion moves proportionally.

✓ ±0.01 % mass
STAGE 03 Balance

Adjust potassium against the steering ratio and test the resulting cation ratios against Mulder antagonism limits.

✓ 22 vectors
STAGE 04 Record

Save the solved N-P-K-Ca-Mg profile with its volume so the mix sheet can be reproduced exactly.

COMPUTATIONAL FAQ

Frequently Asked Nutrients & Recipe Questions

Deterministic answers from the domain solver, verified against the published tolerances.

01 How do I convert salt mass into elemental ppm? ▾
PPM = (salt mass in grams × purity × ion mass fraction) / volume in liters × 1000. The ion fraction comes from the molar mass of the element relative to the salt, which is why calcium nitrate contributes only part of its weight as calcium.
02 What is Mulder's chart used for? ▾
It maps cation antagonism: excess potassium suppresses calcium and magnesium uptake, excess calcium suppresses potassium and magnesium, and so on around the ring. Ratios rather than absolute amounts drive lockout risk.
03 Why does the K:Ca ratio matter for generative steering? ▾
Shifting the ratio toward potassium tightens stomatal behavior and pushes dry matter into fruit, while shifting toward calcium favors cell wall strength and vegetative expansion. The profile solver exposes the ratio directly instead of hiding it inside a fixed blend.
04 What elemental profile suits a balanced vegetative feed? ▾
A common vegetative baseline is roughly 165 ppm N, 48 ppm P, 215 ppm K, 175 ppm Ca and 60 ppm Mg at 1.85 mS/cm. Every value must then be scaled by the target EC and diluted for the source water contribution.
05 Why is bicarbonate alkalinity measured separately from EC? ▾
Bicarbonate carries very little electrical signal yet consumes acid and buffers pH, so it can be high in a low-EC supply. Treating EC as a proxy for alkalinity is one of the most common causes of unexplained pH drift.
