Penman-Monteith root-hair desiccation model for aeroponic misting. Enter droplet size, air temperature, VPD and crop stage and the engine returns the half-dry time of the root film, the optimal ON/OFF mist cycle, desiccation risk, oxygen score and daily water use — with EC, pH and water-temperature penalties folded into a green—yellow—red safety band.
Oxygen and survival headroom stack with the wet/dry half-times; the rhythmic cycles/hour count shows as the dashed arc. Root-hair health holds in the centre.

This is a deterministic model: the same inputs always produce the same outputs, calculated entirely in your browser with nothing sent to any server. It is a planning aid — not a quote, not a dosing instruction, and not a yield forecast. Treat every line as a working estimate and validate it against your own prices and measurements.
It models one system: Penman-Monteith root-hair desiccation model for aeroponic misting.
The engine computes 10 outputs from your 12 inputs. The headline number is Half-Dry Time (s), alongside Optimal OFF, Optimal ON, Cycles. Every output updates live as you change a parameter.
Outputs depend on the inputs and assumptions shown here. Confirm relevant measurements and local conditions before acting.
Half-dry time = 0.8 s per micron of droplet, scaled by Q10 temperature (22 C = 1.0, 30 C = 1.7, 15 C = 0.6), VPD via f = 1/(1+0.8 kPa) (0.5 kPa = 0.71, 1.0 = 0.56, 2.0 = 0.38), density (10/mm² = 1.4, 50 = 1.0, 100 = 0.7), airflow (0 m/s = 1.3, 0.5 = 1.0, 2 = 0.6, 5 = 0.4), root zone humidity (80% = 0.6, 95% = 1.0, 100% = 1.5) and crop stage (seedling 0.7, veg 1.0, flower 1.2, fruit 1.3).
Optimal OFF interval is 70% of the half-dry time — the nozzle sleeps while the film thins to a stable fraction, never allowing hairs to go dry.
Optimal ON interval = (root hair density x 0.02 ml per hair x 1.5 coverage) divided by nozzle flow, clamped to 0.5-10 s so short, wet bursts never overshoot into pooling.
Cycles per hour = 3600 divided by (ON + OFF). Risk = OFF as a % of half-dry time minus 70, so a cycle that respects the 70% rule sits at 0%.
Oxygen score = 100 minus the ON share of the cycle (%). Water use per day = nozzle flow x ON x cycles per hour x 24 h, in millilitres.
GREEN = survival over 80% with risk under 10% and oxygen over 60%. YELLOW = survival 60-80% or risk 10-30%. RED = survival under 60%, risk over 30%, or oxygen under 40%.
This model combines the earlier Aeroponic-mist-timer-calculator, Root-desiccation-timer, Mist-cycle-calculator models.
The root hair film half-dries in about 0.8 s per micron of droplet, scaled by temperature, VPD, airflow, root hair density, humidity and crop stage. At 50 microns, 22 C, 1 kPa and 0.5 m/s airflow the half-dry time is about 18 seconds; hot, dry, windy conditions cut that to a few seconds.
Cycle often enough that the root hair film never reaches full dryness: run the ON interval built from nozzle flow and hair density (clamped to 0.5-10 s), then rest for 70% of the half-dry time. A 50-micron, 22 C, 1 kPa aeroponic tower cycles about 146 times per hour.
Root hair desiccation is the drying and death of the fine root hairs that take up water and nutrients when the mist film evaporates before the next cycle. This original model scores the risk from the OFF-to-half-dry ratio and clamps the survival gauge with EC, pH and water-temperature penalties.
The best misting interval keeps ON short and steady while OFF stays under the half-dry time. Aim for OFF at about 70% of the half-dry time, oxygen over 60%, and desiccation risk under 10% — that combination reads GREEN on the survival gauge.
Prevent root drying by matching cycle length to the environment: raise root zone humidity above 90%, cut airflow over the roots, keep water under 24 C, hold EC under 2.5 mS/cm, and never let the OFF interval exceed the half-dry time. The timer reports the exact OFF ceiling.
The settings are ON from nozzle flow and hair density, OFF at 70% of half-dry time, recomputed for your droplet size, VPD, temperature, airflow and humidity. The defaults — about a 2 s ON and 12-15 s OFF at 50 microns, 22 C, 1 kPa — are a strong aeroponic start.
