The ROI and budget blueprint for a hydroponic farm. Enter grow area, crop, yield, price and system type and the engine returns annual revenue, profit, payback years, NPV and break-even sales from your capex, opex and labor lines — with a green—yellow—red financial safety read.
Dashed arc — the share of revenue the operating bill consumes. Net profit holds in the centre.
12 parameters · live recalculation on every change
The top line, the operating bill against it, and the operating profit that survives — the real bridge between gross and net.
Running total after each term — the final net matches the headline reading in the result card, kept in sync live.
This is a deterministic model: the same inputs always produce the same outputs, calculated entirely in your browser with nothing sent to any server. It is a planning aid — not a quote, not a dosing instruction, and not a yield forecast. Treat every line as a working estimate and validate it against your own prices and measurements.
It models one system: The ROI and budget blueprint for a hydroponic farm. Enter grow area, crop, yield, price and system type and the engine returns annual revenue, profit, payback years, NPV and break-even sales from your capex, opex and labor lines — with a green—yellow—red financial safety read.
The engine computes 10 outputs from your 12 inputs. The headline number is ROI % (%), alongside Annual Revenue, Annual Opex, Annual Profit. Every output updates live as you change a parameter.
Outputs depend on the inputs and assumptions shown here. Confirm relevant measurements and local conditions before acting.
Crop yield factors: lettuce 1.0, tomato 0.8, cucumber 0.9, basil 1.2, strawberry 0.6, microgreens 1.5.
System capex multipliers: NFT 1.0, DWC 0.8, aeroponic 1.3, vertical tower 1.1; yield multipliers: NFT 1.0, DWC 1.0, aeroponic 1.2, vertical tower 1.3; opex multipliers: NFT 1.0, DWC 1.0, aeroponic 1.2, vertical tower 1.1.
Total yield = area × yield/m² × crop factor × system yield; revenue = yield × price.
Capex = area × capex/m² × system capex; opex = area × opex/m² × system opex + labor hours × area × hourly rate; profit = revenue − opex.
Payback = capex ÷ (revenue − opex); ROI = profit ÷ capex × 100; NPV sums profit/(1+discount)^t over the loan term then subtracts capex.
Break-even kg = capex ÷ (selling price − opex per kg); safety is GREEN when ROI > 20% with payback 0, RED when ROI 7 yr, NPV < 0, or break-even exceeds 80% of yield.
This model combines the earlier Commercial-farm-calculator, Roi-calculator, Farm-budget-planner models.
A commercial hydroponic farm calculator starts from the growable area: total yield in kilograms is area × yield per m² × crop factor × system yield multiplier, revenue multiplies that by selling price, capex is area × capex per m² × system capex, and opex adds the recurring cost plus labor. The commercial farm planner here rolls those into ROI, payback and NPV so the build is read before the capital is committed.
The hydroponic farm ROI calculator returns ROI % as annual operating profit (revenue minus opex) divided by total capex. A 500 m² lettuce room at 30 kg/m²/yr and $8/kg prices out near $120k revenue, about $100k opex and $150k capex — roughly 13% ROI and 7.5-year payback — before debt service and taxes.
Total capex is grow area × capex per m² × a system multiplier: NFT is the 1.0 baseline, DWC about 0.8, aeroponic 1.3 and vertical tower 1.1. At a $300/m² average a 500 m² NFT room lands near $150,000 and a 1,000 m² vertical-tower build with higher per-m² spend near $550,000 — the planner prices the exact footprint.
A hydroponic farm budget planner models a capital line and a recurring line. Capex is the build (per-m² equipment and installation scaled by system type); opex is the annual burn — per-m² consumables and energy multiplied by system, plus labor hours per m² at the hourly rate. The planner here subtracts opex from revenue for true operating profit and checks break-even in kilograms against production.
Profit per square foot (or per m²) is annual operating profit divided by the found area. In the planner, profit is revenue minus total opex, and dividing by grow area gives the per-m² figure — track it against capex to see whether density growth from a vertical-tower 1.3 yield multiplier justifies its higher spend.
Calculate ROI by taking annual operating profit (revenue minus opex) and dividing by total capex, then multiplying by 100. Pair it with payback (capex ÷ profit) and NPV (discounted profit stream minus capex) — green is over 20% ROI with payback under three years and positive NPV, red is under 10% ROI, payback past seven years, negative NPV, or break-even above 80% of yield.
